Probably John's best performance of this song that tells the story of the 1910 Gibson guitar that his grandmother gave when he was a 12 year old boy and how it shaped his life.

This old guitar taught me to sing a love song
It showed me how to laugh and how to cry
It introduced me to some friends of mine
And brightened up my days
It helped me make it through some lonely nights
Oh, what a friend to have on a cold and lonely night

This old guitar gave me my lovely lady
It opened up her eyes and ears to me
It brought us close together
I guess it broke her heart
It opened up the space for us to be
What a lovely place and a lovely space to be

This old guitar gave me my life, my living
All the things you know I love to do
To serenade the stars that shine
From a sunny mountainside
Most of all to sing my songs to you
I love to sing these songs for you
Yes, I do, you know
I love to sing my songs for you

  • John, I always cry when I hear this song more than any other. You were my first concert when I was ten and now that I'm much older still the best. You got me thru some rough times and made me enjoy happy times that much more. When I go to the mountains I always think of you. I was brought up with your music so thank you for the beautiful voice, musicianship, talent and being a beautiful sou. I will always fight for conservation in your name.

  • One of my favorite John Denver songs, and it brings tears to the eyes even now so long he's been gone from us. I think I should start singing it again.

  • back when music told of feelings and stories and had meaning! this was one of the best times for music!

  • Heard a teen say in WalMart the other day:"it won't be long and there won't be anything but electronic music". What a dope! He's never heard the likes of John Denver, Don Mcclain, or Gordon Lightfoot. Music comes from the heart of the hearer or the musician. Electronic music is GREAT, but its certainly NOT all there is! I hear music when I'm all alone in the peace and quiet of my bedroom or when I'm driving with the stereo blasting! Thanks for posting this great song by a legend!

  • @denverrosemorse My first concert was An Evening with John Denver. I miss him so and share your feelings!

  • Annie's Song was my wedding march in 1981. I've been married 30 years this year. John Denver will always be near and dear to my heart.

  • John and his guitar brought me and my wife together - we've been married for 28 years now.

  • Perfection comes along but once in a human lifetime, John is as close as it gets. Thank you Mr Denver, you will live on forever.

  • I love this song! Beautifully played and sung by John...

  • Wonderful song sung so beautifully. John's ability to write such meaningful songs and perform them so well continues to effect people all over the world. Thanks for posting.

  • Love it
