Oh my goodness . . . Maria Callas in Watford?

I'd love to hear the story of how that came about (!)

It was Walter Legge of EMI (husband of ES). He was the producer and brought it all together. An important week, I'd say!

This opera is coming to my city, I can't wait. God, Callas leaves you speechless. That was 1954, and to think she's lose a child 6 years later. Yup, i've been doing my reading on Callas. What a tragic life.

The final note is ethereal, floats just fine and then diminishes into a sustained pianissimo. Callas gets her toughest criticism from the most myopic of musical minds. She shows that you can achieve the same effect without being a slave to Puccini.
If u don't feel (forget hearing) the sadness throughout and especially in the final note then u r perhaps inhuman.

Still in our times there are good sopranos, excellent sopranos, brilliant sopranos and Maria Callas.

Recording a bit scratchy but what a performance. Maria always seemed to put so much passion into her performances. Even without the translation it is very moving

The 'A' on 3:50 with the portamento "makes up" for everything else! It's heavenly!
