Demonstration of how light pollution can affect the environment, ecology, astronomy, engineering, and even human health, as well as how light pollution can be reduced by using directional lighting. The demonstration uses a black tarp, a lampshade (or styrofoam or plastic cup), and an incandescent lightbulb.

Presentation by Luke Bissell and Josh Schoenly, Institute of Optics, University of Rochester, www.optics.rochester.edu. Video courtesy of Optimax Systems, Inc., www.OptimaxSI.com.

  • Hey, is this Will Southmayd? What are you up to these days?

  • Honestly, I wouldn't want to put my head underneath the plastic. Nice to see one of my Pentagames team members going after a PhD. Go Luke go!
