Many Chinese people living in New Zealand say the media here has got it all wrong in their coverage of the protests in Tibet.

Chinese websites are full of criticism of the media for painting the Chinese government and its army as the villains when the Tibetans have been attacking ethnic Chinese.

As the West criticises China, many Chinese people living in New Zealand say the western media is deliberately misinterpreting the footage that's coming out of Tibet.

What the latest pictures do not show is the police response or what prompted a peaceful protest to turn violent.

They were broadcast by Chinese state television in an attempt to win the propaganda war over Tibet.

Here we see what is alleged to be an ethnic Chinese man being attacked by Tibetans. Many Chinese New Zealanders say that if anything, the police and army have been too soft on the rioters.

3 News has been told that the Tibetans are gangsters who attacked innocent Han Chinese civilians, killing at least 18. Chinese websites are awash with angry people who are upset with the way their country is portrayed. They say Tibet has been a part of China for 1,000 years and should never be separated.

Freedom is exactly what the Chinese government wants to take away from the rioters. It has released pictures of its most wanted list and offered a reward for the names of the people involved, people that some Chinese here regard as terrorists.

In a November 1950 memorandum to Ottawa, Canadas High Commissioner to India, Warwick Chipman, noted: if China owned Tibetthere would certainly be no point in sending an army to conquer it. The sending of an army is surely a confession that the matter is not domestic.

As the Canadian Legation, Chungking, China advised Ottawa in 1944: there is no doubt that official China is determined to swallow Sinkiang, Tibet, Outer Mongolia, Kansu and Sikang, no matter what the people living in those regions may feel about the matter. The Legation added: The Chinese do not see that the attempt to compel the Tibetans to allow themselves and their country to be incorporated as an integral part of China is most definitely an act of aggression.

formerly classified diplomatic documents from many nations are now available and concur with what the canadian foreign service summarized for ottawa in 1950, that china's claim to tibet is "a fiction".

beijing may be getting diplomatic cover in exchange for profits but no one truly believes that tibet ever was or ever will be a part of china.

I am not China's Chinese but 3rd generation overseas Chinese. So I am not influenced by China's government text books.

2nd, unlike most countries, China's history is not recorded by government. Over 5000 years, Chinese are hack fond of recording history. One of the early record of history is Shi Ji written in about 100BC. There are long list of other records. China government just can't rewrite them for propaganda. Even Malaysian have Chinese language publication since early 1900.

It is not about the government, it is about the Chinese's pride as a race. If you understand Chinese history, the Chinese will despise its own government if the government is weak and bow to foreigners.
