There must be many Earth like planets out there given that the Universe is great at making planetoids, etc. However life still may only be here, or maybe not. Until we definitively nail down how Abiogenesis happened, we have no way to calculate the odds with any degree of certainty.

@RomulanMastermind The short answer is that I don't 'know' (anything) for sure, We certainly don't have to infer multiple origins for life on Earth and, though we still might find life elsewhere in the solar system, there are no obvious signs of it.

Gary's understanding of Biology seems pretty sound to me. Not his fault that the implications of it are less than uplifting.

But  if it does happen (life) every so many billion years on one of the trillions of planets how does it change zero sum? or even the awkward mechanisms of cannibalism, addiction & reproduction. An intelligent civilization will eventually understand this (zero sum) and eventually decide to gracefully leave existence, so all this Drake Equation crap is just a useless game to figure out if our crap on earth happens somewhere else in another time. So what the fuck?

Just because someone is not traveling back in time and saying "hey, i'm from the future"... it is NOT proof that time travel is not possible.

There could be laws and restrictions on time travel- from a more civilized advanced cilvilization than us.
