I saw Bergonzi and Deutekom also, and that doesn't prevent me from loving this clip with the gorgeous voiced Meli. 20 years ago Bergonzi was a sublime artist but he could struggle with the high notes. Meli is wonderful. Theoddossiu might be a little harsh sometimes but then so was Deutekom.
I loved the singers from 1982 and I love these singers from today. Thanks for posting this great clip.
A pale reminder of one of the best operatic performances I and my friends ever saw! This opera in San Diego 20-odd years ago with Deutekom, Bergonzi, Lima & Plishka. Audience was stunned with the beauty and power of the peformance with this cast! Unforgettable... With such deterioration in performance practice, it's no wonder we are subjected to bizarre stagings and trashy manipulation to try to distract us from the obvious lack of quality where it is most needed. Sad... pray for another GA

I have the 1987 video of I Lombardi, with Bergonzi and Pertusi. He was only 27 years old at the time and he was already a great Pagano.

To really listen to a SUPERB RECORDING, listen to RETHBERG, GIGLI and PINZA perform this. It is SUPERIOR to this.

Not only is this well sung, the pacing is beautiful--not the mad romp that leaves one, not breathless, but out-of-breath. Who is the conductor?
