I remember the West Countries around Portsmouth as a wee boy in 60' and they were in far worse condition than you describe for these garratts. I know, as I have driven both these 20th class around this time.

Nice to see the RR Garratts get some of the attention normally reserved for their SAR cousins! Shame about the nick of the engine though; looks and sounds a lot like the very knackered, sadly neglected machines on countless films from the twilight of BR steam in the '60s; blowing drain cocks, steam passing from what I reckon to be either the blower pipe or a drifting valve pipe... sad to see on such a beast.

That would be the steam engine which drives the Auger to push the coal from the tender to the firebox. The speed is controlled by the fireman.
