I like the original Tom Waits version, and I like this version. In my opinion, this is what a cover should be. I hate it when it when musicians try to regurgitate the exact same sound as the band they're covering. It cant be done and it always sounds like crap. A cover should be recognizable but different. It has to have an original musical twist, it's own personality, something that shows off the musician's character; and I think you pulled that off very nicely. You made the song your own.

@SmileysRevenge100 Thanks! I feel the exact same way about covers; there needs to be some defining instrumentation or harmonic changes that separate the cover from the original and make it stand on its own.

I watched the Private Listening Party video the day it came out, and I don't see anything in it where Tom says he doesn't want people covering his music. That's not really his style.

@diamonddust22 You didn't have to listen to it. Tom Waits has covered other peoples songs. These people probably do also write their own songs. It's not my cup of tea, but damned if I should tell them what they can and can't do musically.

Go learn an instrument and how to read music and write your own original music from start to finish instead of latching onto real artists who know how to write. I leave that to the people that are such boring individuals, they have no personality and therefore let the music they listen to define their personality.
