Woody Herman conducts (and sings!) with his Orchestra in an unlikely number for a late 1930's big band; King Oliver's composition "Doctor Jazz".

  • FYI Rare shot of Frankie Carlson on drums.

  • Thank you very much for giving the name of this superb drummer - I have wanted to know that for years!

  • What a voice !

  • Proper title is 'Doctor Jazz Stomp' by Oliver/Melrose...

  • @yammayammaman You're making a common mistake, but Dr. Jazz was written by Joe "King" Oliver. Look it up if you don't believe me!

  • Woody in fact was a very good jazz singer.

This band also plays very good. Great tonally balanced and better in tune as some of the later, more famous herds!

  • Wild - I never heard the verse to this song anywhere. Thanks!
