The problem with Elrond killing Isildur here is that the men would never have bought it. They would have assumed that Elrond killed Isildur to take the One Ring for himself and now had it hidden with him. And a giant melee in the middle of Mordor where the Orcs havn't been completly destroyed but meerly fallen back without a leader sounds like a bad idea to me.
