Rupert Murdoch
CEO, News Corp
February 2010

Robinson: "Emily Bell, who runs the website of the Guardian, which is a big website, the guardian has a big online readership."
Murdoch: "They've made a big, long-term investment"
Robinson: "And her reply to the notion that readers will pay for online content runs as follows and I am quoting her, 'rubbish, bonkers, a form of madness' close quote. Now in your mind this isn't even a debate anymore? She's just wrong and that's all there is to it?"
Murdoch: "Yes"
Robinson: "Alright"
Newspaper Paywalls: Point/Counter Point
What Impact Do Paywalls Have on Newspapers?
Jeff Jarvis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zBsS58R9IM
"Im sad to see the New York Times trying to charge for the reasons Ive mentioned that I think charging is a problem. And also, because I think it will make the new york times, it'll make it shrink."
Arthur Sulzberger, Chairman New York Times
The NYT and the Digital Frontier
May 2011.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecTZw_Fehdw
"One last fun thought, weve actually seen an uptake in print and home delivery subscriptions, because people know that if you get the times delivered to your home, you actually get the digital bundles all access free. So we are seeing a little uptake in print, as well, and that's nice."
Will Paywalls Work for General Interest Newspapers?
Michael Wolff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w4_8CE5GTc&feature=related
May 2011
Wolff: "Well if it does I think it probably changes the nature of the news business"
"If people pay it will be a good idea. If they don't pay it will be a not good idea."
"So I might take that back, Im not sure what happens if there is, what can only be, a relatively modest success at this point."
Mary Beth Christie
Head of Product Management, FT.com
December 2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLjxuF0Royw
Christie: "I think for us its been very successful and I think it could work for the New York Times and the Telegraph, I don't see why it wouldn't; it's a pretty easy model. You have to have enough content, enough to make the counts worthwhile. You have to have enough mass of content; enough changing."
Why are industry leaders implementing paywall models?
Jeff Jarvis, Buzzmachine.com
March 2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EChaJGNtKwA
Jarvis: "This is Rupert Murdoch's surrender, the future has defeated him. He has no new ideas, obviously, to make advertising money, no knew ideas to create valued relationships with readers. Even he has no new ideas to use the internet to find efficiency."
Rupert Murdoch
CEO, News Corp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7GkJqRv3BI
Murdoch: "We they shouldn't have had it free all the time. I think we've been asleep. You know it costs us a lot of money to put together good newspapers, good content, and, you know, they are very happy to pay for it when they buy a newspaper. And I think when they read it elsewhere their going to have to pay. Not huge sums, you'd be surprised how much can be done, how cheaply, into the average home."
