well its kinda gray area sence you are putting it into the ground so that its not really baiting the deer as long its at least 10 days before the opening of deer hunting season if you get a rain within a few days its soaked into the ground so that it looks to be cleaned up its a matter of someone from the dnr to catch you doing it and hunting over it in that time frame but it does seem like it might be worth a try ive got a nice area that id like to hunt with my muzzleloader in december

We can hunt over minerals and gels along with any natural growing bait in MN. An example you can hunt over is a patch of pumpkins you planted under your stand. You cannot pile pumpkins under your stand from your garden.

@ChasingTailOutdoors very intuitive, great idea, i have some pictures of where the deer have made a hole in te ground where i put some homemade stuff on facebook in the next couple of days, but where i put out some black magic, just some leaf clearage

i went and bought 50 pound bags of dical, dried mollasses, trace mineral, and salt. for 50 bucks. mix it in a huge barrel then take out some in a desired sized bucket. mix with water till smoothie form. then let dry for 5 days. works great. make your own mineral blocks.

@bigandjfeederz @huttonworks Technically it is a gray area, if you are hunting the trail going to the mineral/bait it could still be considered hunting with the use of bait. It is all in how the law is worded. If they want to get you they can get you.

@bigandjfeederz you are correct, and that means affected soil as well. I use feed pans to hold my blocks for this reason. I normally don't hunt where I have them placed anyways, they are just used for picture purposes. Just got from hanging feeders today, again not to hunt over but will help the deer recover from this hard icy winter.

@huttonworks in indiana it is illegal if you are within shooting distance of the bait, at least thats what ive heard
-
@ChasingTailOutdoors i live in indiana, and the law is that you have to take the bait from the site, 10 days before you hunt it, nad the bait must be COMPLETELY gone
-
Is it illegal, even if you are not hunting directly over the bait?
It is illegal in Indiana as well to hunt over mineral. However we are allowed to have them in the off season. I would think though since a deer is a goat that Goat mineral would better benefit the deer. I'd think the cattle mineral would have more minerals than the deer can process.

You may be right about the cattle mineral. I figured they were both in the ungulate family so the mineral requirement would be similar but now that I think about it the percentage in goat mineral may be closer. I used the cattle mineral primarily because the owner of the cattle in there ask me to use the same stuff he was using.
