This doesn't change people's perception of your identity from civilian/student to military/soldier it just changes from full hair to shaved head. People had this perception in the 60's and before but even in the 70's and 80's people would percieve you more as a 'punk' and now I think it has just become fashion and normal for balding people to shave their and therefore has differentiation at all!

I think the point being made here was that, although one level it was just a haircut, it marked a shift from one persona to another. The haircut was symbolic, marking the departure from the civilian phase of life to the military phase.
