Adam Larson and Lester Loschky from Kansas State University's Department of Psychology conclude in this Journal of Vision study (http://bit.ly/7QU3Zr) that periphery is more useful than central vision for seeing an entire image. Nevertheless, central vision is more efficient for scene gist recognition than the periphery on a per-pixel basis.
