These bikes are really nice for what they are made for, which is cruising around. My wife had one and sometimes I would ride it to work or just around town. Very good torque, decent pick up and the brakes are OK but not great. With 2 riders a quick stop can be a little dicey. I prefer mag wheel for tubeless tires but Suzuki doesn't offer that for the Savage/S40. I had a lot of fun riding it but I prefer my Sportster overall. Still, if it was all I had, I'd ride it 'til the wheels came off!

Well, I wrote that comment a year ago. I since bought a S40 and put 20k miles on it. Going to N.Y. to C.A. to T.X. to A.K. etc..
I love my Savage, and it was the best choice for my journeys. It was small enough to move around for setting up camp, and big enough for the highway. Only problem I had was a flat tire do to wear and tear.. but that's my fault.

@JurkoffJay I find it somewhat ironic that you guys question if the 650 motor has enough balls for the highway. I have a 2003 ninja 250, and i dont tell anyone its a 250 so i dont get laughed at, but im the one whos laughin cuz that little 250 has a 175 pound rider doing 110 maxed out. You wouldnt believe it, the things rips. I love the single cylinder motor on the s40, so i am confused why it wouldnt be highway suitable.
P.S. id be happy to make a video of my bikes performance.

I weigh about 180, I've never owned a bike before but I'm really set on this one. Do you think this would be a decent starter bike? I was looking at a Honda Rebel 250 but everyone has told me that it gets far too boring to ride after long. From the sounds of it, that seems less likely with this one.

go for it. this bike did me well for 3 1/2 years and 16,000 miles worth. It was my first bike and I definitely recommend it. I weigh about 215 if it matters. good luck

as long as you stay under 70 you will have lots of fun and the bike will do perfect. now im jealous cause i want to ride across country but dont have the time yet. maybe in a few years. good luck and have fun.
