I've read this novel, too, and its totalitarian regime does subjugate women, minorities, and even most mainstream Christians. Its leaders twist passages from the Old Testament in order to coerce women into becoming little more than breeders in an age of declining births and environmental catastrophe. That's the point: subjugation as injustice. But the text is very graphic at times, and the protagonists are pro-gay and pro-choice, so I think students should be allowed to opt out if they object.
