A kaleidoscope of colours was unveiled above the River Tyne as Britain's biggest light artwork shone out. Nocturne, a 360-metre creation by artist Nayan Kulkarni burst into life over Newcastle and Gateshead's historic quaysides.

The £300,000 project, which is longer than three football pitches will illuminate the Queen Elizabeth II Metro Bridge for at least the next 15 years.

Its low-energy LED lights will never repeat the same combination of colours as pre-programmed barcodes create colours rippling across the structure - rising and falling in intensity and brightness to match the ebb and flow of the tide below.

  • @ILuvNUFC u betthey are lol . i still have the recipets for em ,,,,, the led clusters worked out at a grand a unit . and the money saved is just mindblowing

  • Yes. I was involved with this project and it uses extremely low power LED lighting. Power consumption is rediculously low.

  • I'll have to take trip down to see it sometime soon. I did'nt realise it was still on. Cheers.

  • Any one got any idea what the arch is all about at the Gateshead side of the quay (behind the swing bridge to it's right) I got some cool video of this last night lighting up in sequence? It's neat and different. Any one know of this?

  • It's still all lit up people and permanent, was there last night adding video with the digital cam? The Copthorne hotel is lit up quite spectacular too. Careful if you use the Gateshead side to get movie as quayside buses come flying up there?

  • Hey I thought I had missed this too, but it's still on and will be on permanent.

The best view for video is on the Gateshead side, right up next to the bridge as the car park from Newcastle is closed (watch out for buses if you stand on the road). I added some video here last night with music. Enjoy send me a link once you add any please

  • Yeh I missed the chance to photograph it. :(
