Fish Therapy for Asthma

Thousands of people from far and wide gather in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad for a strange cure for their respiratory ailments. Asthma sufferers benefit from the treatment which, involves swallowing live two-inch-long murrel fish stuffed with herbal medicines.
[Sumitra, Asthma Patient]:
"I have been taking the medicine for past ten years and it has helped me a lot. Earlier I used to face lot of difficulty during the attacks. There used to be lots of coughing which used to make me breathless and there was this feeling of suffocation as well. But now after taking this medicine, there has been a tremendous relief," said Sumitra, an asthma patient taking fish medicine treatment.
The therapy is so popular that many people bring their families for treatment.
[Suraj Prasad Soni, Local]:
"I also brought my grandson here as he is suffering from asthma, which aggravates during the winter. I called him especially from Bhopal and brought him along here forcibly."
The fish helps clear the patient's esophagus as it makes its way down to the stomach, and later releases the medicine. It survives for about 15 minutes inside the body, helping to clear phlegm in the lungs as it flaps about.
