Flash Atkins -- Campervan EP
1 Test One
2 Cherry Bounce
3 Test One (Flash Dub)
4 Cherry Bounce (Flash Dub)
Flash Atkins is a former Super Hero who lives in a Campervan in a field in deepest Yorkshire, maintaining an unhealthy addiction to drugs and booze.
Flash is actually the alter ego of Paper / The Bionics' Ben Davis and he was created as a reaction against perma-tanned-indoors-sunglass-wearing-wanna-be-superstar DJs.
The Campervan EP is four tracks of floor rocking house music. First up, Test One has taken the original bleep classic as a starting point and given it a disco makeover. Starting off deep and percussive, it breaks to live bass and horns with plenty of analogue synths providing the electronics. Once the acid house piano comes in at the end, it's dancefloor game over!
Cherry Bounce uses a cheeky sample to hold down a straight up take of garage house. With a bass line that nods to Farley & Heller and funked out Rhodes, it builds to a synth heavy drop before heading back in to the grooved keys.
The Test One dub strips things back to a simple nagging synth line for a big room take that has got Tribal Records running through it's DNA. Big reverbs and heavy bass means this is simple and very effective.
Finally, the Cherry Bounce Dub goes tracky and hypnotic, riding out the original's elements with the Rhodes getting filtered to change things up.
More quality from Flash Atkins, the man with no plan.
