People new to public speaking don't seem to know what to do with their hands.
Some well known hand positions are: * Hands on the lectern * The fold * The clasp * Hands behind your back * Hands in pockets * The fig leaf

When you start public speaking the best place to keep your hands is to hold them relaxed by your sides. From there you find you will start making natural hand gestures. Once you have made a natural hand gesture rest them by your sides. If you hold or clinch your hands in any of these other positions you will find it hard to move your hands into smooth gestures because they won't be relaxed.
