Piano Man.

Note: Photos of the younger Bob Dylan are on this video partly because he is known for his harmonica talent and there are harmonica parts in the song. Dylan was part of music's 'foundations' in the 1960's and onwards and I'm sure influenced many musicians who in turn influenced others with their sounds and take on music expression. According to Google, Billy Joel sang a song written by Dylan--"To Make you Feel My Love."

Lyrics:

"Piano Man", Billy Joel

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son, can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes."

la la la, di da da
La la, di di da da dum

Chorus:
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us all feelin' alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke and he'll light up your smoke
But there's some place that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me."
As his smile ran away from his face
"Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Oh, la la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably he will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessman slowly gets stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone

Chorus
sing us a song you're the piano man
sing us a song tonight
well we're all in the mood for a melody
and you got us all feeling alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about their life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"

Oh, la la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum

Chorus:
sing us a song you're the piano man
sing us a song tonight
well we're all in the mood for a melody
and you got us all feeling alright

  • Yes, I agree it's Dylanesque, and frankly one of the best written songs ever written. I love how he says the piano sounds like a carnival, and sure enough, it's in 12/8 waltz timing. It has that merry go round feel. And the lyrics are perfection! People in a bar talking about failed dreams and drowning their sorrows. You can get so inside of it. Everybody knows someone from this song. Genius!

  • @Evster2012 Thank you for the well thought out comment. Much appreciated. :-)

  • nice but you've got the lyrics wrong dude, I think.

Paul is a "real estate novelist", so he's writing a book I'd imagine he's not finished or not started.

The song is about people not fulfilling their dreams or, at least, dreaming of another life. Barman wants to be a hollywood movie star, waitress practising politics etc.

Pedantic, but I love this lyric.

  • @knowurlimits Fixed it, thanks!

  • wow what a song. . one of my favorites. I feel the true essence of the song can be captured in the last verse

Cause i know that its me they've been comin' to see

to forget about life for a while. . .

he also goes on to question his own role thee at the bar (man what are you doin here) . .

We are all living lives that are not perfect according to us, and somewhere we look upto something or someone for some hope.

  • It song is beautifull

  • we can all relate to the people in this song, we all have dreams and hopes that we know are just a little out of reach. we all feel sometimes like our dreams are just, dreams.

  • One of few songs that can bring a tear to my eye

  • Went to a concert of his. It was worth 10 times the admission ........he was all over that stage and never once out of breath or off key.

Fantastic singer, showman, and songwriter !
