Generic black hole mergers cannot be computed analytically but require supercomputer simulations. This video is based on a numerical simulation performed in 1999 by the Numerical Relativity group at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, the Albert-Einstein Institute Potsdam, led by Ed Seidel. It utilized the supercomputers provided by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) in Urbana/Champaign, Illinois. The physical background is described in the paper http://prola.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v87/i27/e271103 . The visualization utilized resources of the NCSA as well, and inspired film maker Stefan Heusler and composer Frank Stanzl to create specifically fitting music for some of the animation sequences. This art project has been described at http://www.zib.de/PaperWeb/abstracts/SC-99-53/ . The grazing collisions of black holes is part one of three sections, the others showing collapsing gravitational waves (Brill Waves) and merging Neutron Stars.
