Joseph Schmidt mit Orchester unter Ltg. von Otto Dobrindt Ein Lied geht um die Welt (A Song Conquers The World) (Hans May/ Ernst Neubach) From the movie „Ein Lied geht um die Welt", Parlophon 1933

NOTE: This song was probably the greatest Joseph Schmidt's hit. Listening to it again, after years , I realized how very special must be the slideshow, accompanying that majestic and grandeur art song. And I thought, the outstanding, astonishingly realistic colourful photographs of the royal Vienna at her best in the year of 1900 - will perfectly match the spirit of the music, as well as the kind of Joseph Schmidt's singing. His soul, after all, was not „Berliner", neither „Prussian" His nostalgic, deep voice of a shy Jewish boy from the Austrian-Moldavian-Polish town of Czerniowce, was just from Wien, not from Berlin. Joseph Schmidt's fate brought him later to the nazi Germany and then -to his tragic end in the exiles' camp in Switzerland . But in his voice the rich and cosmopolitan - as well as, in the same time, charmingly provincial soul of the Hapsburgian „Mittel Europa" has always been reflected.

  • In the Nazi propaganda film "Hans Westmar" (really Horst Wessel), which details the "martyrdom" of the Nazi brownshirt SA saint (and was released in 1933, the very year of the film "Ein Lied geht um die Welt"), there is a scene in a Berlin nightclub that was depicted as "international", i.e. communist and anti-German. In the club we can see a poster on the wall for a film: "Ein JUD geht um die Welt"! This is how the great Joseph Schmidt was destroyed.

  • Thanks for uploading this un-forgetable heavenly voice.

  • His most popular song and the only one of which he left recordings in three languages: German, English and French.

  • @hermancerose1 Oh pardon, er war in Flucht nach Schweiz. Das habe ich dan nachher verstanden.

  • @Eowyn1969 Was ist das ein Auffanglager? Ist es so ein Konzentrationlager?

  • @chorusinger ,Thanks for the update

  • @Bigband78

I just read in a Dutch paper, that Heesters turned 106 last week.

Although Dutch born, he still lives in Germany.

  • Thanks fatsfan (Michael) for this version.I wonder if Jopi Hesters is still alive?

  • Schon mit 12 Jahren habe ich mir die Platten von Ihm angehört.

  • ein toller titel aber noch besser gefällt mir, der titel ein stern fällt vom himmel, auf jeden fall ein superstar!!!
