Hey ladies. Now that it's just you and me - Guys, this isn't your video. C'mon, get out of here. I'll wait.

Okay, now that it's just us girls, I'm going to talk about three things that I, as a female shooter, like about shooting, and three misconceptions that I've seen at the range about just about women and shooting in general.

Before I get into that, one thing I think is really important for any female shooters is, if you can, get professional training. Like, learning to draw from a holster, learning to shoot in self defense situations, etc. I definitely will be looking into it for myself. So, if you have the option, take it.

Now that that's out of the way, three things I like, enjoy, LOVE about shooting:

#1) I get a sense of self-empowerment and control about shooting. When I go to the range, I get into this bubble. And, that sense of focus, when I can hone that in and do better, is very rewarding.

#2) Shooting is a precision sport. The better that you get at it, you see the record of your targets and your groupings get tighter and your shots get closer to the bullseye, and you feel good about that. Bringing that piece of paper home, "Look at that "x." I nailed it."

#3) For me, this is an important one: shooting is a family activity. I shoot with my brother, my sister, my parents... It's something that ends up being a bonding experience for us. When my sister shows me her target, "Destinee, look what I did!" I can't help but to feel excited for her.

For the misconceptions:

#1) Once misconception I see about women and shooting is that females don't have the same phsyical capability to shoot as guys. That's just not true. I've seen some guys who shoot really really well, and it's impressive, guys like Hickok45. Watching him shoot is like, wow. But, I've seen guys who are really terrible at shooting, too. It has nothing to do with being male or being female.

#2) Another misconception is that women can't handle larger calibers as well as guys can. That's not true. Just because maybe a guy is bigger and has bigger muscles or whatever doesn't mean he's going to shoot better with that .45. It's funny for me because I like the 1911, which shoots a bigger round, the .45 ACP. But, I'm terrible in comparison when I shoot the .22, which is a much smaller round.

#3) The third misconception is that shooting is only for self defense. Now, I definitely think that training and learning to handle yourself in a self defense situation is important. But, I think that women who don't shoot a lot would be surprised to find out how much fun it is just to go and to shoot. Not just to train to protect yourself, but just to enjoy it.

Girls, as long as you train and practice and you go and you shoot, you're going to get just as good or better than any guy who may have wanted to bring you to the range.

So, why should you guys encourage your women to learn to protect themselves with a firearm? And women, why should you learn to be able to protect yourselves with a firearm? Consider these facts:

In a study performed by the National Institute of Justice and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1998, one in every six women has been the victim of attempted or completed rape at some point in her life.

In 2003, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, nine out of every ten rape victims were female.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2008, there were 2,105,900 women victims of violent crimes.

The problem of violent crimes against women hasn't stopped, but we can help that by empowering women to protect themselves. Firearms training could one day save a woman's life. Ladies, I encourage you to learn how to protect yourself. And guys, I encourage you to get your women out there to learn how to handle themselves in a self-defense situation.
