Composition by Frank Horvat from the CD, A Little Dark Music. Working with the Sun is inspired by a YouTube video of the same name. Produced by SELF (Solar Electric Light Fund), this short documentary describes the excellent work that this progressive non-profit organization is doing in bringing clean renewable energy to children in South Africa.

My short, peppy composition based on this film emulates many of the rhythmic elements associated with African percussion and the rustic tone of folk instruments like the mbira. This unique tone is produced from a conventional acoustic piano by placing cardboard on the strings.

  • FRANK, THIS ONE'S MY FAVOURITE! I Love the sound with the CD cases on the strings. it Sounds SOO COOL (it's Susan, by the way, if you didn't realize :P)

  • I love this piece, both musically and in its connection with solar energy! Plus I like the mbira effect--it's great to hear such a different sound coming out of a grand piano. We heard Frank perform this song live in a wonderful concert in Saskatoon last night. Don't miss his Green Keys tour if you get the chance!
