  • Ebert should not be focusing on the specifics of the invasion. That part of the film is a McGuffin.

This is essentially Spielberg's Iraq movie. The opening sequences remind us of how we felt on 9/11, and then the *rest* of the movie proceeds to put us in the shoes of people (i.e. the Iraqis) who fall victim to a misguided occupation.

And that sequence where Ray's car is raided by an angry mob... is anyone else reminded of Occupy Wall Street? I mean, damn. This movie is chillingly relevant.

  • Totally agree with Ebert on this... These aliens with amazing advanced technology waited a million years on earth just to be killed by germs? Stupidest idea ever. And for all the action is worth, the humans still lost until the "unexpected turnaround", which is quite anti-climatic.

  • I think Hollywood must hate H.G. Wells. First the remake (butchering?) of The Time Machine, and then this.

Couldn't they have taken H.G's story as is, and set it in 1898 England? Was somebody afraid that today's teenage movie goers (the idiots that form the bulk of movie audiences today) couldn't "relate" to Wells' story, unless it was turned into a "Battle Los Angeles" type of video game filled with ear-splitting noise and an over abundance of CGI?

  • @SlothGamer60

    That's what I thought, too. :P

  • screw you ebert. this movie rocks

  • Ebert is straight out right. If your gonna be putting speilberg and tom together then you have to get your story straight. It really doesn't make sense. The original made sense but this one was shot in the late 90s I'm guessing? So come on relate the facts so we can believe the story. I'm with Ebert on this.

  • roger is usually right. only fools care MAINLY about special effects we want story and plot and this lacked both

  • How many times DOES Ebert have to explain that? Jesus, ratings are always relative: in this case to other sci-fi invasion/Spielberg actions films. In that context, this film probably is worth less stars.

I really hope people take time to actually read these reviews. His comments are always enlightening, even if the final rating is negative. He's not quite the sardonic polemicist so many illiterates make him out to be...

  • @adamzanzie Your analysis is laughably moronic.

  • Why is he complaining about a prop?

  • @stuntmanmike37 Totally man Ebert just disses on movies that us audience like because he couldn'tmake it as a screenwriter back then.
