"I don't mind being called a gay Hispanic writer," says Johnny Diaz, whose slick, highly entertaining novels often explore romantic relationships between men. "Who cares," he quips "as long as people are reading your books and enjoying them?" People are certainly enjoying Diaz's books, which manage to avoid the clichés of contemporary gay literature by focusing on universal themes, such as family conflict, difficult friendships, and career ups and downs.
