I have always used an airlock of and on and it works just fine, just shake the starter ever so often. I have a starter now but I put foil on it. That works too. Doesn't matter either way. Relax, have a homebrew...

If you try it without the airlock, but with just a cover over the top of it, you can multiply the yeast rather quickly. Youtube "yeast stir plate" for some ideas on making really bad ass starters.

What I do when I make a stater is I what you did with out the air lock. I put tin foil or plastic wrap on top just so no crud falls into it. I am culturing some yeast right now and I just have a sandwich baggie over the top of it. You still want it to be able let it "inhale and exhale" if that makes any sense. Not just exhale. I am sure that it works fine with an airlock as long as they have what ever O in the bottle w/them until its gone. good site to check out homebrewtalk(dot)com
Why would you put an airlock on a starter? Do you understand the idea behind a starter? The idea is to encourage Aerobic fermentation. Aerobic fermentation allows yeast cells to divide or "bud". They can not do this with out... You guessed it! OXYGEN!!! that is why you should always aerate your wort before you pitch your yeast. once the lock is put on and the yeast go aerobic until all of the O is gone then they go anaerobic and start producing alcohol.

It works fine when I do it. How should it be done?
