It's because the Lego cylinder blocks and pistons are just for show. They actually work opposite to the way a real car would. Instead of the pistons driving the car, moving the wheels on the car drives the pistons.

@jj72rg I have a lego V12 engine like yours but it doen't run off of compressed air.How did you get yours to work like that with the compressed air?
