So, I started putting together my Conrail Coal train and decided to test the new cars I bought plus some old cars I had on hand but had not yet converted for my needs, and well, the results were interesting. I'm looking for more Bethgons to accurately model some on Conrail's coal trains. Conrail used to run these trains in lengths upwards of 70 cars, I am currently at 16 cars that have passed the test. One SD80Mac (Kato) is being used here to pull this cut. The other one will be phased in as I acquire more cars.

No Conrail equipment was hurt in the filming of this movie however, the same cannot be said for the NS coal gondola at the end. Heck, even the undecorated spacer car faired well.

  • Why did it derail?

    Nice crossing signals!.

  • @robertgift

The last car derailed due to being a bit underweight. As it hit the crossing it literally bounced up and off...

The crossing lights are from NJ international if I recall correctly. We wired a decoder up to run a couple of relays and that is how we set up the flasher circuit.

  • where did you get the bethgons? i need some for my csx layout. i run a lot of coal drags on the mountain sub

  • They are a mix of LBF/E&C, Walthers, and Athearn. My most favorite are the Athearn ones, followed by Walthers and lastly LBF/E&C.

  • beautiful!

ques: are the coal cars athrean? or umm walthers? i have 20 coal cars im working on coal drags as well. i model NORFOLK SOUTHERN tho. but i do have some conrails they where my first love. untill black became my new color haha. i plan to have over 100 cuz i love running 60+ car consits. with my dash9's i got plenty of power to haul 3 lbs of wieght.

  • Most of the ones in this video are Athearn. I have the first Walthers six pack but that is not in this train. The car that derailed is an E&C car as is the undec car in this cut.
