Earnest Anselm.
Earnest Anselm died January 5 at 1:41 in the morning, of a prolapsed rectum. No one knows the actual cause for this condition, but several health issues can combine which are likely to end in one. Earnest Anselm was a dwarf chinchilla. He was very small, only 350 grams. He was 3 years, 8 months. Even by dwarf chinchilla standards, he was too young to die.
Because he was a dwarf, Earnest Anselm had a multitude of health conditions. He was always hard to feed, he did not like eating pellets. He didn't like drinking water. He was constantly in threat of pressure sores on his feet. He suffered from chronic constipation. He suffered from incontenance. He had a neurological condition (a palsy) because of his dwarfism.
In spite of all his issues, Earnest Anselm was a magical, tremendous, outgoing chinchilla. He loved life. Every day, he seized life like it was his last day. He wanted the most of every moment. He lived for treats, playtimes and his best friend Johan.
His loss is as tremendous as he was. We are all in shock, it was so sudden, so gruesome. There was nothing we could do, but love him as he died, and promise him that we will take good care of Johan for him.
Please, do not support an industry that intentionally breeds for dwarf chinchillas and for fur. Please, instead of buying your pet chinchillas, adopt one from a rescue. There are thousands of chinchillas in rescues across the country, waiting for homes. Support them, buy from rescue stores. If you can't adopt a chinchilla right now, sponsor one. I know that no rescue would turn away even the smallest donation. $15 will buy 50 pounds of high quality pellets. $12 will buy a bale of horse quality hay. $5 will buy a pound of organic rosehips. Even $1 would help. We don't care whose rescue you donate to, our only wish is to help chinchillas. That has always been our focus, and it always will be. If you are unsure of whether a rescue is good, see how they treat the chins, and see how they treat people who are in the midst of a crisis. If there is any question, look for someone else.
Earnest Anselm was our beloved pet. He was a Wunderchin through and through. He was tremendous, he was amazing, he was a fighter. He was full of a zest for life that earned him his name. We will never forget him. Earnest Anselm, we love you.
