Here is an old Carter Family song done by Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. In this video, I try to do crosspicking as my friend George Shuffler did it years ago, and can still do it! Hope you enjoy the picking and me singing. This song can be found on the CD "Ralph Stanley - Distant Land to Roam" it's a tribute to the Carter Family. I would like to thank my good friend James Alan Shelton for his friendship and his dedication to this work. - To answer the question of how do you crosspick, first let me explain you must start slow and work your way up. I like to teach people using the "D" cord. Using the 3 bottom strings you start with the 3rd (G) string going down 2nd (B) string down and finally 1st (E) string up and right back the the 3rd string and do that over and over and over and over....and over. START SLOW....develop a smooth pattern. After you master the pattern in "D" position, experiment with other cords such as "G" and "C". It's too lengthy to explain here but you can do the crosspicking roll on any 3 cord arrangement. Note there is no noting other than making a standard cord!!! If you have to watch yourself when you play, watch your right hand. Remember the most important thing is not to forget the melody, or how the song goes. If you loose your melody, you've lost it all. Make the guitar say the words for you! There are a few sour notes on my part but its hard to play along with a CD, record and pick all at the same time!!! Please leave your comments!!! If you want me to post some instructional stuff let me know and I'll try. :)
