http://www.calsinus.com Orbital Decompression Surgery - RIGHT SIDE. Patient with Graves' orbitopathy, which causes the protrusion of the eyes and can lead to vision loss. Middle turbinate is to the right, eye to the right. Maxillary antrostomy, sphenoidotomy and complete ethmoidectomy have been performed. The frontal sinus has been opened. The bone overlying the right eye is removed. The periorbita (tissue enclosing the eye) is opened with a sickle knife, allowing orbital fat to protrude into the nose. This allows the eye to settle into a more natural position.
