Why did the US politicians and US media stop us from asking 'why did they attack us?'

Countries and people that hate the United States hate us because we are meddling in their affairs. In the same way we Americans would be furious (and I personally would take up arms) if some other country sent troops or setup bases in or near America.
We can deal with direct threats to America if and when they happen. These threats would happen much less or not at all if we stopped meddling (and murdering).
