Part Three of CONFLICT OF INTEREST focuses on the mismanagement of the Afghan campaign during George W. Bush's administration. However, Afghans tell me that if the U.S. and NATO withdraw, it will be an utter disaster for their country.
It is no accident that the campaign in Afghanistan was severely understaffed and under-funded for the past eight years. Since 2002, the word on the streets of Kabul has been that the Katrina-style approach to reconstruction and security in Afghanistan would lead to an easy re-invasion by the Taliban which is exactly what has happened. Since taking office, President Barack Obama and his envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, have both complained about the inadequacy of intelligence and the United States incoherent policy in the region. The stakes cannot be overstated. President Obama is currently deploying an additional 20,000 soldiers to Afghanistan in an effort to correct the mistakes of the Bush II Administration.
Hopefully, this time, for the sake of the Afghans and ourselves, we'll get it right.
