Army trucks abandoned at the end of WWII in 1945 can be seen on the North CANOL Road. The road was built to support and service an oil pipeline from Norman Wells, NWT to Whitehorse, YT and runs 144 miles. The road ends near Macmillan Pass at the beginning of The Canol Heritage Trail, Canada's most remote hiking adventure. There are no services on this road. For more detailed info check out this site: http://explorenorth.com/library/roads/canol_road.html
From MacMillan Pass (mile 144) to Norman Wells, the North CANOL Road has been designated the "Canol Heritage Trail." I turned around at the airstrip near MacMillan Pass due to fuel limitations but it is possible to for a 4X4 to go another 50 miles and motorcycles twice that distance. Beyond that, the river crossings are deep and that the trail has been almost obliterated. Numerous articles have been written. Here is just one: http://buddstanley.blogspot.com/2009/11/trail-report-canol-road.html
I enjoyed the bagpipe music, was it on CD? I am curious

It's my understanding all thos eold Ford trucks were robbed of their Marmon-Herington gear years ago, (which were Canadian built right hand steer?) and this is just the tin and bodies left behind. Of the Linn tractors used to tote supplies and CANOL pipe back in 1942 and 1943, two cannibalized units are near Norman Wells and several others now owned by Bill Graham in Edmonton.

You can go up to the border of Yukon & N.W.T , along the North Canol .. Nothing is more beautiful, than Mc Millian Pass in the Fall !! Colours so wonderful !!! Of course many Kms before , that , you do run , into the vehicles left by the American Army , , they have a place of Honour !! You have to drive to Ross River , then take the Ferry over to start your journey.
I have been Overseas, so been awhile since I have returned . but at the old train car, take a break & leave a can of food !!

Nice! My bro and I are planning a trip up there in later 2011. I'll be the camp support guy in the Jeep, and him and his buddy are on the off-road motorcycles. Good preview. How far can you go????
