Shot from the Kibo crater rim and highest point in Africa. It was a brutal ascent beginning at midnight on the last night in order to get to the top by sunrise. I was moving like a snail and my headlight burned out. However, I always try to make a fashion statement at these peaks.

  • I used a professional expedition company as they were required by Tanzania law. The trekking (not technical) was, at times, arduous but not too bad except for the last day. No sleep, up at 11 pm and then the slow trod up for the last 6 hours. Absolutely brutal in the dark and cold high altitude.

Anyway I recommend contacting Max in Arusha: maxde77@yahoo.com for more info.

General fitness would be a good requirement. I'm guessing we did about 3 to 5 miles a day on the way up. Good luck

  • Yeah, Machame route. It actually was 4 nights and 5 days.....I said 3 nights in error in another post.. Not super easy for anyone, I would think, except the porters and guides. One never knows how the altiude is going to affect them. The final few hours were brutal especially since we started off at midnight to get to the top by 6 a.m.

I can recommend an expedition company if you'd like.

    Good luck!

  • I just used a Canon Powershot with a video clip. Camera was fine but the batteries went dead surprisingly quickly. I suspect it was the cold not the altitude though. One of the other summitters (sp) had a rollup solar panel he put on his backpack to charge batteries. Really worked well. Good luck in the mountains.

  • Cool.

  • the guide is slightly retarded

  • It's worse now, in respect of snow. See my fly-over video taken last month (2nd video on my youtube site, under Speak Swahili Dammit.

  • Since I'm terrified of heights and just can't do rock climbing, this is one of the seven summits I know I can do and look forward to hiking up one day!

  • hello, which company would you recommend? i am thinking of doing this next year, is there any training you would recommend for me or what distance should i be able to easily walk each day so that i am ready for it?

  • Exelent video! nice place ,Greetings from Pucón-CHILE.

  • Thanks for posting this! I am hopping to summit in 2012 and it's cool to see vids like this from the summit. Glad you weren't so elitist about it. It's not a given that it's super easy...

What route did you take? Machame?

  • Very nice video! Delivers the climbing difficulty!
