p to 100 tonnes of oil could still be on the sinking Rena, threatening to spill in to the ocean.
The stern section of the stricken cargo ship finally slipped off the Astrolabe Reef today, and Maritime New Zealand confirms more oil has escaped from the vessel. Transport minister Gerry Brownlee says there doesn't appear to be any danger to humans or the environment, but acknowledged the immediate problem is establishing how much oil is still onboard and ensuring that doesn't leak any further.
Allan Lee reports on the day's developments.
