Pierre Fournier plays "Suite for Solo Cello No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009" (Bach) (4th movement - Sarabande)
From: VAI DVD 4356 The Art of Pierre Fournier
Pierre Fournier (1906-1985) was renowned for his elegant tone and impeccable musicianship. He was regarded among his contemporaries as a true aristocrat of the cello. In 1959 and 1960, Fournier visited the studios of Radio-Canada in Montreal for two television recitals: one, a program of music for cello and piano (with Guy Bourassa, piano), featured sonatas by Debussy and Francoeur, and the Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, by Schumann; the other appearance included two major works for solo cello, the Bach Suite No. 3 and the Kodaly Sonata, Op. 8.

  • Someone once said that you cannot play Bach, you have to allow the music to live through you as with no other composer. Fournier has such elegance, such mastery, he even surpasses Yoyo Ma. Music of the soul played by a master. I nearly failed my law degree because I was in the music library morst often, listening to this man playing on old records (I am ancient!) rather than reading up case notes. He must be a deeply spiritual man to be able to play like this, its all about the music and not him

  • one night i was randomly going through all the tv channels and i found this guy on a public access channel and i watched him play for like an hour... im not even really into this kind of music but he is a really good celloist
