This is a song I wrote about the hypocrisy of some people who call themselves Christian, yet are pro-war. It is not anti-military or anti-Christian. I was originally going to call it "The Last Amen" but I thought "Guns and Jesus" was more memorable.

Guns and Jesus

Down in the barracks the chaplain gathers
Those who believe in the Trinity
Father, Spirit, and Son thats Jesus
Trying to live their lives as He

They hold hands as they give thanks to Jesus
Praying in the same of the Son
After they say their last Amen
They think they do His will with a gun

On the battlefield the soldiers fire
At a home of terrorists, its believed
But it was only some local farmers
They took out a whole family

They ask forgiveness on their knees from Jesus
That His blood will wash away their sin
After they say their last Amen
If ordered to theyll do it again

I sometimes wonder if Jesus came back
Just like the words in the Bible claim
What would He think of all the bloodshed
By people fighting in His name

Whatever happened to Thou shalt not kill?
Or are there exceptions for wars to be won?
Then I guess that last Amen
Means nothing when all is said and done

For murderers, they dont follow Jesus
We do to Him what we do to the least
Blessed are the meek, blessed are the poor
And blessed as the ones who make peace

  • @Chriscjs ".waged to restore justice and restore peace"

Sometimes The Prince of Peace just has to shoot people...out of love.

    WWJS?

Never forget the Flood. Never forget Passover. Never forget the plagues of Egypt. Never forget Sodom and Gomorrah. Never forget Elijah and the Bears. Never forget the promises of Revelations. God not only doesn't care about babies dying, he's actually killed literally tons of them, personally.

Genocide is next to godlyness, if the Bible is to be believed.

  • I'd encourage you to study Romans 13:1-7. Clearly there are unjust wars that Christians should be deeply saddened over and even speak out against. But there are no doubt just wars...waged to restore justice and restore peace. I don't know anyone, Christian or non-Christian who is "pro-war". War is brutal...nobody LIKES war. But sometimes it is necessary to bring justice and peace....lest tyrants rule and injustice prevail. ie: WWII and the holocaust.

  • One last thing before i finish my tangent. I respectfully disagree with the use of the term pro-war...anyone who is pro war is either 6 years old with a cap gun or suffering from a serious mentaly abnormality. Some at my seminary would call pro-choice persons pro-abortion...and i call umm out on it. Dont get me wrong I think abortion is wrong and evil but to say someone who is pro-choice than that is outright disingenuous and I would hope that you might see it as the same with pro-war.

  • ...and you run of the mill enlisted man (Privates, Sergeants, specialist, etc.) doesn't attend chapel services. Officers ( Lieutenants, Majors, Generals) attend in higher percentages but its far from a majority) In my opinion with so few attending chapel its hard to make a case that this a christian horde in the middle east. Kinda like someone can call themselves a Democrat...but if they didn't get off their rear end to vote for Obama its hard to defend their assertion...

  • targeted killing of non-combatants women, children, etc. and claims Christianity as their faith is a walking contradiction and well deserving of the tongue lashing which u so eloquently inflict. however you say in your song that the soldiers who kill the family "believed" they were terrorists. If u meant by that poor informed grunts with faulty intelligence than I would have to respectful disagree with this being a war crime. Also i would like to point out, having talked to several chaplains

  • Thank YOU for your kind words and don't worry about taking time to reply, it was well worth the wait. I'm a Lutheran (LCMS) Seminarian(one who is training to become a pastor) I'm also applying to be an army Chaplain, just thought I'd share that to provide some context for my writing. As far as atrocities are concerned i couldn't agree more. Often times we see atrocities occur, they are evil and wrong and again a product of the broken world in which we live. Anyone who believes in the...

  • Thanks Bill, for your thoughtful comments, and I apologize for not responding sooner. My song is more about imperialism and hegemony rather than actually defending someone legitimately, and tries to point out the dischord when someone is a Christian but would commit such atrocities. It is a comment on the religious right and their influence on political actions, often involving the military.

  • we would commit even more atrocities then we do now. Have u heard the story of the Good Samaritan? Most people have, it talks about a man who is beaten by thieves and after several people walk by a samaritan comes along and takes care of the beaten man....so my question is this, if he had come across the beaten man while he was being beaten should the samaritan have just watched him get beat? or should he tried to protect the man by force? God Bless You

    Bill

  • First off you have a beautiful voice and your quite skilled with your instrument, whowever I would like to point out a few inaccurices I feel your song contains. First of all I havent seen a single person bearing the christian banner into battle, Soliders, airmen, marines, and sailors fight for the united states not for Jesus. Man is fallen and sinful, many humans commit crimes and all of us think evil things. If unrestrained by laws and forces (like the military) I believe...

  • I can only hope more people hear this.
