Taken from a 1968 appearance. features Frank Strozier on alto and John Klemmer on tenor. Just doesn't seem to be hardly anything with Don on YouTube.

  • This is from the Tanglewood/PBS broadcast. It was recorded shortly before the concert at Stanford that produced much of the "Autumn" album.

Thanks for posting! Where did you get a copy of this?

  • @ndiscala

I trade videos, and cd's, somewhat.. so really not sure. I've had it for a few years and just felt Don needed to be represented here.

For anyone who enjoys these clips, I'd recommend getting a copy of "Electric Heart". This is a movie about Don.

  • This is priceless, as far as THIS Don Ellis fanatic is concerned!!!

As your description pointed out, there just seems to be almost no video record of the Ellis Orchestra out there.

Thanks so much for posting some of his best stuff for me to drink in, like a starving man all of a sudden getting a four-course meal!

  • @StradMan37

    Glad you like it!

  • More mainstream than usual. Recorded New Ideas with Don & Jaki Byard, then he went Indian, Jaki to Mingus, I to Harvard to study Golden Age Spanish Lit & protest War in Vietnam.

  • Awesome! Just watch Don Ellis moves!

  • Awesome!

  • good example of Strozier's playing. Frank loves the blues and Ellis would throw a bone to him once in a while.Klemmer was a "Free" player in the day.

  • Don Ellis underrated genius years ahead of his time. Technical abilities on the horn transcending usual expectations ...

  • had the pleasure of playing w/don and the band when he hosted jazz clinics in the early seventies.......people forget how many influential players came through his ranks. Jay Graydon, John Klemmer, Ralph Humphries...and where are Vince Denham and Sam Falzone? Don was an amazing player and a very giving individual who is missed greatly. p.s. I'd love to see some footage of him playing drums, as he often did in his live shows...............drumduggg

  • Thanks, for posting, Huge fan of his music..

  • Wow, Great video, thanks. I saw Don in concert a couple times. Brings back old memories.

  • my dad thinks frank strozier is black or mixed is this true? because he looks white to me. just wondering
