Irish comedian Graham Norton (BBC) talks about his family's links to Belfast's Sandy Row area.

Graham suffered terrible discrimination and bullying in the Republic of Ireland because he came from a protestant family.

  • Interesting comment on the Republic plates, and having to park in a Catholic neighborhood. I had a similar experience per say; the wife, and I honeymooned in Ireland; we flew in to Dublin, and rented a car from the airport there. Made our way south, and then our last several days we were in the North (spent 2 weeks in Ireland). While in Belfast we stayed at a B & B, and soon discovered it was a Protestant neighborhood (lovely neighborhood with wonderful proprietors/hosts).

  • @FMichael1970 With the Irish government providing money and weapons to the IRA, refusing to extradite wanted IRA men to the Northern Ireland to face trial on terrorism charges and collusion between the Irish police and the IRA in South Armagh some protestants viewed anyone from the Republic with suspicion. Thankfully relations are much better now the IRA has stopped killing protestants.

Ah, the sound of the moronic bigot and homophobe!

  • To continue...The area where we stayed in Belfast was not far from the city center, but yet our rental car was vandalised (passenger side mirror found it's way onto the sidewalk)...Insurance covered the damage, and I was reimbursed - however these things still happen...Nothing to take away from our trip in the North - everyone was wonderful.

  • @thejoyofcroy lol spot on.
