@cjellwood Because the same solar energy is spread over a much larger surface at the poles than the equatorial zones.
-
yes it is. mars is dam hard to get mag on and a good view of it. nice scope dude.

hmm do you have it upside down? that ice cap is on the other side in other videos
Some dont even have the ice cap

Superb

Great image. Wish I could get some surface detail on my 6" Newt. :(

Hello, in your video, Why is the north pole of mars iluminated?
-
The chromatic aberation makes it actually look cooler.

Extremely powerful telescope.

Is there a possiblity that you could reach similar results using 350/1600mm dobsonian telescope?

@ParaglidingManiac I believe nice tracking system and finely made mount are needed. An equatorial platform could help also. Anyway one couldn't give up fine movements adjusting devices in such an all-but-cheap dobsonian mount. No light breeze should shake the scope, otherwise the loss of digital infos would lead to average final results: so high resolution shows any failure. According to the tracking smoothness in this movie, it seems that telescope was mounted in a very expensive setup.

@balzerbarn,
355/1600mm dobsonian is on a GOTO system. I wonder if that's enough...

@ParaglidingManiac Recent uploads (surf ut.) shows these systems as a little shaky, requiring frequently corrections to keep planets within the field of view. Processing is dreadful and more than timewasting when you have to register a shaky sequence.
In addition, magnification was low in most cases I saw. Of course, everybody is free to try.
Hope future will give better alt-az tracking technology at reasonable cost. But, it seems to me that best astroimagers have got classic equatorial setups.

@ParaglidingManiac In the end, top seeing and top optical-mechanical quality are all is needed to reach them. I don't know the quality spread in the production of 350 mm mirrors. Never looked through them, sorry.

from the ground or special location?

@DanFrederiksen From the ground, I presume. Through a very performing scope. Under excellent seeing, in addition...
