Andrew Tracey asserts that this instrument is the "kalimab core" and the "original African mbira" from 1300 years ago. I have written a book, "The Student Karimba", which introduces this instrument to the world, culminating in the eight variations of the song presented here.

The instrument is a newly designed Goshen 9-Note student karimba in G. The small size, nicely rounded tines, and low price - plus the new book - make this a perfect instrument for students and beginners to learn on. Available only at http://www.kalimbamagic.com

  • I just spent all my money on an Array Mbira. I was thinking that it would be nice to get a much smaller (and much cheaper) kalimba sometime, and this fits the bill perfectly. Two questions: can it be easily retuned, and what makes it different from a kalimba/mbira?

  • FIRST: this can be easily tuned or retuned. If you retune by half a step or less, just push or pull while wiggling. If you retune by more, loosen the screws by half a turn, retune, and retighten the screws.

SECOND: the array mbira is not an mbira, it is just a name. I would have called it a "tined dulcimer" or something. 8 of THIS instrument's 9 notes are also at the center of the mbira dzavadvimu, and this is also the same as the mbira nyunga nyunga's lower (main) row of notes.

  • I just received this Karimba in the mail from Kalimbamagic. It's fantastic. I have never played one of these before and I can't put it down! I play guitar normally and it really put some nice callous on my left thumb. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to get into Karimbas!

  • La,

Thanks for the positive review - grow your thumb nails! -mark

  • INCREIBLE!!!

  • @kalimbamagic Ok, so it's the tuning/layout that determines the name. Thanks for answering my questions. I might order one one day. Just one more thing: for the Catania 8-note student karimba you offer an African tuning in which "octaves and the 5ths are perfect intervals, but the 3rd, 7th, and 6th lie between the western major and minor intervals." What are the exact cent values for each note? (It would be helpful if this was on your website!) Thanks!

  • Can't stop listening, I'm excited to be able to play like this one day. :)

  • Awesome! This song makes me happy! Great job!

  • einfach großartig
