I HAVE HAD THIS PONY TAIL PALM ABOUT 11 YEARS. I HAD NOTICED THAT THERE WAS GNAWING AROUND THE TRUNK, WHICH WAS PROBABLY DUE TO SQUIRRELS. I PUT IT IN A SCREENED IN AREA TO PROTECT IT, AND I TOOK A LOOK AT IT AND FOUND IT QUITE ROOT BOUND. IN THIS VIDEO I REPOT AND TRIM UP THE TREE.(I posted a new viedo recently (May, 2008- showing traditional bonsai at the Morikami Museum. It's just a silent look at their trees, but it is inspiring)("Morikami Bonsai Gardens May 2008").(***PLEASE VIEW PART 12 ABOUT THE WARNING ON HANDLING SPHAGNUM MOSS BEFORE YOU WORK WITH SPHAGNUM MOSS***).

  • BTW That is amazing that you've had that Pony Tail Palm for over 11 years, I've only had mine for about 3.

I wonder what mine will look like in a few more years. I didn't think they got tall at all.

    Nice trim, looks great.

  • I planted one of my bonsais outside and its about 4-5 feet tall.

  • I found a cheap paint ball gun you can buy at wal-mart deters squirrels from invading your garden without doing any serious harm to them if you decide to shoot directly at them and not a little bit to the left or right just to spook them.

That's just me, I feel bad about killing flies.

  • The squirrels are my friends and I wouldn't think of shooting anything at them. I now have peanuts that I bought for them. They win.

  • why would u disturb the roots as much why not just plant it in a bigger pot messing with the roots like that and stunt it or even kill it if done wrong it would grow much faster in a bigger pot

  • Because then you would hust get a bigger plant. The idea here is to miniaturize. Read some bonsai books. Jerry

  • @teresachristy You can, and if you want you can try rooting them to get more little ponytail palms. Don't cut off all three at the same time, though- cut one off, then once it's growing happily, try cutting another off. Always leave at least one shoot on the mother plant.

  • @TimmyHaag they should be able to reach 18-20ft but that would require a big ass pot.

  • thanks for sharing!

  • @bonsai9723 hi sorry to disturb, do i have to cut the roots off? I replanted mine last night but afraid (saw this video after repotted it) to cut the roots off? :( Can it die by cutting the roots off?

  • My ponytail palm bonsai I have had for 7 years, I am afraid of cutting the roots when replanting. I replanted it yesterday but now saw this video, not sure I dare to cut the roots:(

Can someone please reassure me I have to cut the roots or can i leave cutting the roots out?

  • Should I trim tall shoots from the top of my ponytail bonsai? I have three tall shoots.

  • That is awesome!Im going to try and find one.

  • thanks for the good info!

  • I hope mine gets as big as yours ! I just went in walmart, saw it and I knew I had to have this plant :)

  • cat chewing the ponytail? they also like to use it as a litre box. any high caliber rife will do the trick.
