Exhibited at the San Jose Museum of Art, this short clip is taken from a 40 minute video recording of a recent performance that took place within The Godfather video Game, on the Xbox 360.

In the performance, the main character is being controlled, while all the other characters onscreen are parts of the game program.

In the game, the performer's virtual self was never able to break away from the limitations of the mafia culture into which he was thrust. He is a tough, intimidating alpha male, and all the other characters in the game are programmed respond accordingly. Even the act of strolling across Manhattan becomes a potentially explosive act, regardless of the performer's intent.

  • this game fucking awesome... played it for the first time in like 2 years... forgot how old it is :L

    pointless video though

  • Thanks for your comments. They weren't pointless. Keep watching!

  • what the fuck is this, i mean, its pointless...

  • Thanks for the comment, but really... Pointless? Listen to the voice over again. If you are a gamer, then surely the ideas make some sense. It makes sense to many non-gamers and museum curators, so anyone who plays should be able to understand the ideas.

  • yeah, but i heard that crap about video gameinfluence, i play Black, but i dont go around with an AK trying to "stop government control" i just personally thought it was a bit weird

  • Thanks for the comment, but I think you misunderstand the point of this video. It is not about the political discussion of how video games influence people or incite violence. It's about how we as players see ourselves within games - how our ideas about identity can be influenced by creating in-game identities that reflect the player's true nature, and not just the personality that the game developer's presume.

  • its a great game. You can put ur own clothes on.moustaches,goties.Its 1 of the best ganster games of all time

  • No no dude there is a difference. An NPC is a non player character which cannot be controlled. A bot is a computer controlled character IN PLACE of a normally controllable character for convenience. An NPC can never be controlled however a BOT is a controllable character which is currently under AI control. It has a bigger signifigance in the realm of multiplayer.
