Even though your money belt will contain your most valuable items (passport, credit cards, etc.), it's important to have a separate wallet for petty cash and day to day uses. That way you're not always reaching into your pants to pay for a meal (um...sorry that came out wrong) plus it can act as a decoy for pickpocket. Lose the wallet and you still have your money belt and essentials. When shopping for a travel/decoy wallet I always look for a few essential features:

- Avoid leather. Go with a synthetic material that will dry quickly.
- Make sure your wallet has a zip pocket for coins. In most countries coins carry a lot of value and it helps to keep them together for easy access.
- Get a tri-fold wallet instead of your normal bi-fold. The currency notes of various countries vary in size and will most likely stick out of a bi-fold wallet.
- Avoid velcro since it will wear out. If you have the time, it's easy to replace the velcro in a wallet with metal snaps.

  • I have never had a synthetic wallet like that. Mine have always been something that resembles leather but I find the snaps on my wallets always begin to tear the fabric and at some point I am walking around with one or no snaps. Does this happen less with the synthetic ones?

  • This wallet actually came with Velcro which I replaced with snaps (I posted a tutorial on how to do this elsewhere).

So fare it's held up well. If you're worried about it falling apart make sure to get a heavy duty synthetic wallet like those offered by Maxpedition and then add the snaps yourself.

    Hope this helps.

  • Money/travel belts are a nightmare to use. They are very uncomfortable, hard to use and you look like a stupid tourist when you have to pull it out. I like your idea of having a dummy wallet. Travel belt is another alternative.

  • Thanks for sharing
