Also, just to show I'm not biased, I was introduced to the property by seeing this film, which I watched repeatedly and fell in love with. I still like it very much and it does some things the Swedish stories can't do or don't try to do. It's not something you just throw away or dismiss, it's good in its own right. But the Swedish, full-length (3hr+) films are better. They're real, involved stories, while this is a polished Hollywood thriller.

The Swedish version is superior to the American version in nearly every way other than cinematography and music. When it comes to look and feel, Fincher and his people can't be beat. And they're all prettier. But that's ultimately the problem, it's a surface film, whereas the Swedish is rough around the edges, shaggy and lived-in and 'real'. The latter ends up much more involving. It also handled the last act much better. In Fincher's film, post-Martin's death feels like a 2nd film starting up.

Also, the ideal (or something nearer ideal) would be technical and stylistic mastery combined with storytelling genius - Hitchcock. I happen to like Fincher, but his films are exercises, they're all about "processes", both as the text and the subtext. The parts show, storytellingwise, and the whole operation, from a story standpoint, tends to be graceless and labored. Step A, step B, step C. Like I said, the subjects of the films, and the storytelling, are both very suggestive.

It's not even really a criticism, it's more of a description, and whether or not it's a criticism can depend on your point of view and what you think is more or less important in a filmmaker.

That's an interesting viewpoint -- I would be tempted to agree, except for two things. One, he is SO good with the technical and visual aspects that his films are beauties to watch even when not great complete films (Benjamin Button being a perfect case in point). And two, although I agree he isn't the best of storytellers, his films still tend to end up pretty good. His track record is very respectable, with mostly good to great films.
