The beacon was turned on in 1894. Chance Brothers in England supplied the First Order Fresnel Lense for the beacon. Supplies were brought in on a single lane wagon road, or floated in on a raft, then pushed overboard to float in to shore on the tide. Originally there were 3 families of lightkeepers and 2 Queen Anne style houses. Head light keeper Olaf Hansen started the vegetable gardens, schoolhouse and post office. The isolation of the area made survival tough.
In the 1930's highway 101 was finished and electricity arrived at the lighthouse. The head keepers house was retired, sold for $10, and the lumber was used for the Alpha Bits store in Mapleton.
During WWII the Coast Guard stationed 75 men there to be ready to guard the beaches between Florence and Yachats.
In 1963 the beacon was automated and computers took over. The last light keeper was Oswald Allick.
From 1970 to 1995 Lane Community College used the property for an extension campus.
In 1995 it went through a restoration and it has been used as a bed and breakfast since then.
