You are right, for me (1/4 Italian) am singing this for a vocal contest. It is a pain to learn how to correctly pronounce this.(Apparently, in Italy R=D)

No one but an Italian could sing such open-throated vowels, just as no one who loves the Italian language could fail to be delighted by his enunciation of it.

mmmm yes you are right, but that is not too much important, i think that the importance lies in the interpretation the emotion that the singer can pass to the public, and of course the singing technique, and in my humble opinion this version have those points.
